Marina is one of the fastest growing commercial real estate areas on the Monterey Peninsula with new buildings and projects being constructed. Since the opening of California State University Monterey Bay on the former Fort Ord in 1994, Marina has seen a continuous investment in new construction and improvement projects. A recent example of new development has occurred off of the 12th street exit where a new shopping center opened that features national retailers (REI, Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Michaels, Old Navy) and the opening of a new Monterey Peninsula College satellite campus. A couple of residential communities are also planned for this area of Marina. The other new growth has occurred toward the Marina Airport off of Reservation Road and Imjin Parkway. Here the city has a vision for creating technology and research centers. A Downtown Vitalization project is scheduled for the city center at the intersection of Reservation Road and Del Monte Boulevards.
